Re: What if they kept Lenin in exile?

Yes, bolsheviks needed people for their take of power. Once in power, this 1st government didn't live long. But it was the Left SR's who broke the coalition because they were opposed to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk that had been negotiated with the Germans. They started to shoot leading Bolsheviks, ...

Re: Period movies/tv-series

Putin charge Trotsky for he wants all chiefs of Russia be untouched, the Tsar, Lenin, Stalin, Putin,.. while he says revolutions are bad, because Putin fears a revolution against himself. Yes, Putin is every much an autocrat as the Tsar or Stalin so it suits him to malign the October Revolution. I ...

Re: What if they kept Lenin in exile?

It has to do with bolshevik doctrine: for them, paesants count for nothing, like you say, despite there were many more paesant soviets (which were workers) than industrial or army soviets. So, for the bolsheviks this is the dictatorship of industry over people. It is not true that the peasants coun...

Re: Period movies/tv-series

While I do not share the same theoretical positions as wsws with regard to the Soviet Union under the rule of the tyrant Stalin, I think they are basically on the money with this very disparaging review of what seems to be a disgraceful portrayal of Trotsky . . . "The series is an exhibition of...

Re: What if they kept Lenin in exile?

There is little doubt that the Soviet regime was much less democratic than it had been in October 1917. The real question is why this was. Right wing historians and some on the centre and left, including the anarchists so beloved of ERISS, argue that this was an evitable consequence of Bolshevik doc...

Funny how the trotskits advocate what they destroyed when they had power, acting like, and even worst than the Madrid governement. Do as we tell, not like we did. Anarchists, Durruti, in Spain: Yes! Makhnovists in Ukraine: No. You may ask for being included in the beta forum, where there is some ma...

It is the declaration of lex tallionis, so he is in some way represented. As soldier he wasn't so relevant to be represented. Only most important leaders are, to avoid have more leaders than units. I was thinking more along the lines of political events really, a bit like in "Revolution Under ...

Trotsky derides the anarchists!

"The bourgeoisie says: don’t touch the state power; it is the sacred hereditary privilege of the educated classes. But the Anarchists say: don’t touch it, it is an infernal invention, a diabolical device, don’t have anything to do with it. The bourgeoisie says, don’t touch it, it’s sacred. The ...

Another very important "what if" is what might have happened had the anti-fascist forces been able to fight a revolutionary war for much longer than the first year or so of the conflict. Both the anarchist CNT and the socialist POUM had been enthusiastic supporters of the social revolution...

Re: What if they kept Lenin in exile?

ERISS is right, Lenin believed only special political elites could effectively lead and be admitted into the party, No, he didn't. The Bolshevik party was a mass working class party at the time of the October revolution in 1917. It was also a very democratic political organisation. The "elitis...

Re: War of the Roses

The problem about the Wars of the Roses is that it wasn't really a territorial struggle in the way that a majority of AGEOD games are. It was a dynastic one spread over thirty odd years and the key factor was which faction won the battle and which royals/leading nobles survived or were killed, not w...

Re: What if they kept Lenin in exile?

He believed in the power of a government class over soviets, he was for power of a party over people, what he did. He lied when he was suddenly telling the countrary of his party, when he went to the anarchist "All power to the soviets/No power over the soviets", as he took the soviet pow...

Re: What if they kept Lenin in exile?

Yes, it's a quote from Lenin in March 1917, who had never believed in the power of soviets. He suddenly took the anarchist speeches when he saw he could gain the power (anarchists were the sole to believe in the people soviets power since the start, 1905 and before, and even in the end when bolshev...

Re: What if they kept Lenin in exile?

That's bolsheviks who, to take the power, ignored the historical contexts and situated themselves badly. They took the place of bourgeois to build their 'worker state' republic, and so had to soon act like them. Few years after nice speaches of Lenin (I hear violins here..), he had made the total r...

For what it is worth I recommend A People's Tragedy: A History of the Russian Revolution. New York: Viking, 1997 as a source to weigh the debate which has been ongoing in this thread. Many events are yet to be definitive in what actually happened despite so much time and documentation. This source ...
