As I replied in my notes about the upcoming 1.10c ptch, the FIW Colonial Campaign requires one to plan carefully, and I realized that this war was closer to 20th century Vietnam than 18th century Europe. In other words, one must apply modern strategy to fighting war in the context of the times. This...

After reading the USMC's modern-day "Warfighting" manual, I now understand how the concepts of "friction" and "uncertainty" play their part in 18th century warfare. It took me several years to fully understand how this AGEOD system works, but once I got the grasp of the concepts, by trial and error ...

What's Happened to the AI in 1.10b?

Pardon me for saying, but the AI seems to have been "dumbed down" in this latest patch. I started the "Whites of Their Eyes" campaign, and in early 1776 the Americans are dominating. I took the mighty Continental Army into an assault on Gage's British force at Boston in October 1775, made them retre...

FIW Colonial Campaign -- "Crucible of War"...

I finally finished the campaign and won a decisive victory in March 1763 as the British. I captured both New Orleans and Detroit, and the French were done for. It was a tough war, and the French AI was a worthy opponent, but I stuck with it and finished it. After four years of owning this game, I di...

The same thing happens in the FIW Colonial variant, too. What I usually do is send Braddock's force, supplemented by supply wagons and artillery, to the Great Meadows region and build a new fort/depot (Fort Edward Braddock). This becomes my base for an attack on Duquesne in 1757-58.

Narwhal, I AM able to upgrade Fort Cumberland to a level 1 fort and level 1 depot, as I transport Delancey's supples and artillery to Alexandria in July 1755, and have them advance cross land to Cumberland. Even if the Duquesne garrison destroys the fort early on, I can rebuild it. This is enough fo...

As of 1756, Col Washington and his brigade of trained provincials are fairly secure in Fort Braddock, formerly Fort Cumberland. I built up the fort and increased its depot capacity. Gen Braddock, of course, has been recalled to England to retire and will live out the rest of his life in peaceful obs...

What it does is secure Augusta GA and South Carolina from Indian raids, at least in the first three-four years. I destroyed the two villages by April 1756, and will now have Col Dunbar's regiments free to be deployed elsewhere. Remember that in the real campaign, these regiments were decimated in th...

The 1755-56 Georgia Campaign

As part of my strategy in the FIW Colonial Campaign I detached Col Dunbar and two regiments of his Majesty's regulars from Braddock's army and shipped them to Augusta GA. Their mission is to destroy the Indian villages at Ocmulgee and Cusseta, in conjunction with a regiment of Carolina provincial vo...

As a WWII gamer, the AGE engine really tossed me for a loop, too. I've been playing BOA2 for 3 years now, and I am just now getting comfortable with the system. The key things are (1) to know how to take the objectives and keep them in your posession; (2) how to maintain large armies in the field; (...

A Design Suggestion

I've noticed that there is no "minimize" button available on the game screen. As I use notepad to write my DARs in other games, this ability would be a nice addition.

Interesting interpretation by ERISS of what being an American is about. Rather than starting a pointless argument, I will simply say that the history of the United States began out of war, and our country does have a strong military tradition in our 200+ year history. Back to the game, I'm wondering...

I strongly second Durk's endorsement. As a guy who has played countless WWII era games, it is refreshing to see a game dedicated to the wars in North America during the 17th-19th centuries. It is a unique theater of war which offers many challenges. The AI will give you a good fight, too.

A "Less Gentlemanly" War

I'm noting in my latest try at the FIW Colonial version that the brutality has stepped up a notch, in that destruction of villages has become common for the F&I raiders. So, His Majesty's forces will respond in kind, and I'm determined to eradicate the Indian villages on the borders of the southern ...

Sangarecha's Indians Being Unavailable

In the latest game version, I'm noticing that the Six Nations are less likely to become unlocked. This was not noted as a game change, but it is more realistic during game play. As the British player, you need those tribes to support you, so I've been using points to unlock a few of the Indian units.

WIA's Beautiful Game Map

I've mentioned it before, but for those who are interested but haven't bought the game yet, the aesthethic quality of the game map is excellent. The non-hexagonal overlay of many wargames also helps in the overall appearance. It's just beautiful to look at and admire. It certainly helps make the gam...

Actually, I prefer the previous terms for general road conditions. Remember, you're decribing the travel conditions for the time period, and how they affect travel with horses drawing supply wagons and artillery. The term "blizzard" isn't all-inclusive, but it well describes the poor road conditions...
