Fabulous series of lectures on the Civil War

https://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/american-civil-war.html Just came across a copy of these lectures by Gallagher--they're terrific. An antidote to the Shelby Foote "lost cause" school, and full of telling anecdotes about the personalities. Excellent bibliography as well. His analysis...

Re: CW2 PBEM

I'm a noob at CW2, though I did some CW1. I'm interested in a game. Whereabouts in Iowa are you? I'm a UI grad.

Re: CW2 Union Player Wanted - 1862 Campaign

I'm novice here--did play some CW1. I'm also new to PBM, but I'd like to give it a try. I think it''s an incredible game.

Grant's reputation

There's an excellent article on the subject in the 2 Oct 2017 New Yorker. It's titled "Shot of Courage". The article, by Adam Gopnik, is a review of Ron Chernow's new biography GRANT. Gopnik discusses the Underwood view, originally espoused by Liddell Hart, that makes Grant a butcher and S...

My first wargame was Avalon Hill's D-DAY. In the 50 or so years since it came out, nothing has topped AGEOD'S ACW. Best match of game engine and historical situation ever created.

I'll try the Sublime Port, aka Sick Man of Europe. And Egypt too, if that works. Is there a thread with the ground rules and procedure. I'm playing 1.03. Thanks! Having read the relevant threads, I think I'll pass. Based on how Germany has treated Egypt and HM Government the OE, I think they're both...

As the Union, you have a lot of options and the luxury to explore them. I recommend playing 18 mos. or so just trying different strategies--naval emphasis/Anaconda plan, militia or regular troops, defense and industrial buildup, whatever appeals to you while getting a sense of what the South can do....

Lee did better at Gettysburg than Napoleon did at Borodino. Napoleon didn't throw in the Guard and instead, let the Russian Army leave the field in order. At the critical moment, he failed to realize how weather, geography and logistics made his position desperate. He needed a decisive victory and d...

Naval transport questions

Using rc4 as USA, I ran the Norfolk Sq up to Annapolis ASAP to load the USMC unit as soon as it released. It was in the harbor when the USMC unit released. It was loaded OK on the ships and ordered to Norfolk. However, nobody left Annapolis the next turn. The message said USMC unit delayed 2 days in...

I'm new to this Berge, but decided to give PBEM a try. I'm on the West Coast and should be able to average a turn a day, except early next week, when I may be offline Mon-Tues. I did Activation box 2 (Medium), Randomized box 2, Naval box 1, Redeployment box 4, Delayed box 3, Foreign box 2, and Histo...
