I usually send two divisions or three under-strength divisions which is overkill. One division could probably take the city. But there are lots of opportunities to employ troops is Louisiana so it's good to bring extra. The CSA might have a river boat force with a couple ironclads. I send about half...

It was considered a brilliant discovery that Grant's army was able to live off the land during the Vicksburg campaign. Union doctrine was to have river or rail supply lines for all major operations. If the South used scorched earth tactics the Union would lose a few options, but basically persist wi...

Hindsight is wonderful.

Nobody could have predicted the battle of Gettysburg.

The Lost Cause interpretation depends on what Confederate officers believed about the future.

Harry Turtledove wrote a huge series on this theme. The US joins the central powers in WWI, while the CSA stays allied with Britain and France.

I think the romance dulls a bit when you consider the "rich man's war, poor man's fight" aspect of the ACW and analyze it as a struggle between two historic economic power centers: one industrial/financial "nouveau riche" and the other agricultural built on slavery. That is a valid point of view, b...

I doubt any of the states will declare independence. What they can do is defy the US government on specific issues. For example, California has essentially legalized marijuana.

I don't think inflation is very painful in the game. I only worry about NM and VP.

Also the new event "economic surprise, inflation -1" is extremely frequent.

Definitely with you on #2. For a somewhat trivial example, look at anti-smoking laws. They just passed a watered-down one in Virginia, prohibiting smoking in bars and restaurants, wth a few exceptions (private clubs; separate fully-enclosed smoking areas). The rights of individuals (and individual ...

I don't like the term "States Rights" for a couple of reasons. 1) Individual rights are declared to be endowed by the creator and unalienable. Who is the creator of states? Just men. When we confuse individual rights with states rights, we risk cheapening individual rights. 2) Collective rights have...

The dream situation for the CSA is to convince the USA to agree to a cease fire while they jointly enforce the Monroe doctrine (no European empires in the Western Hemisphere). In the process of "liberating" Mexico, the CSA would annex Chihuahua and Sonora. If I recall correctly Foote discusses a pla...

Wow that is very impressive. So Britain has a very good chance of defending Canada. Does anyone think the Brits would/could invade the USA? I agree with Redeemer that the war would devastate international commerce. The Union could do OK without trade. But, Britain was perhaps more dependent on trade...

I think GB could have broken through the Union blockade at will, but I'm not sure they could lift it completely (at least not late in the war). In this period wooden warships became obsolete, and the seemingly invincible British navy was far from invincible. The Brits had some good armored frigates,...

What if... foreign intervention?

Big topic. 1. If Britain and France recognized the Confederacy right away, what would happen to national morale in the North and South? 2. Is there any chance Britain and France might have intervened late in the war if the CSA appeared to be winning (like in our game)? How would this play out? 3. If...

I don't think Scott was right, at least not at the time he was proposing his plan. For the federal goverment to just atttempt to passivly starve the population of the South into submission would have been politically untenable. It also had little chance of working.
