I'd be fine with 97 seconds for a AI turn, but mine are considerably longer. While my machine is not that modern it is a dual core Pentium 2.00ghz which exceeds the game requirements. My turns are running in the 4-6 minute range. That for me is too long.

1 Turn times are WAY too long. its brutal especially if your trying to play one of the "minor majors" and are just trying to hit the turn advance button a few times. 2 The F4 interface is extremely difficult to understand or manipulate. 3 I want to zoom in a bit more. Right now the max zoom still cr...

Looks pretty good overall. Stuff I like: ⋅ The 50% disk with pop on one side and structures on the other. Very clear info. ⋅ The built up side to indicate fortifications with the unit being "inside" Stuff I think could be improved ⋅ The port graphic has too much water i...

As to the quality of the Northern generals, especially early on I just read a interesting point. Many of those early generals were political chieftains. Their support was needed for the war generally but more specifically for the early raising of troops. When you take this into account the use of Be...

TheDoctorKing is right and on a more micro level there was the issue of debt and collateral. Due to a variety of reasons virtually all plantation owners were in debt. Invariably their single largest source of capital was their slaves. They could be sued as collateral or sold to raise money. In order...

Like any huge upheaval in human events the ACW can be analyzed from many different points of view. Each tells a part of the story. Certainly there was a aspect of political power with the balance inexorably tipping towards the "North" or to be more precise the "Free states" mainly due to massive imm...

Certainly this is true, but then Winifred Scott was also a Virginian. There's no doubt that many in the South felt that way (as did many in the North) but that doesn't mean they automaticly had the right to succeed. There really are two seperate ideas here. One is that a new nation is almost always ...

But did the Confederate State governments have the moral authority to act on behalf of their inhabitants? Particularly those inhabitants that were currently enslaved. Is this really a case of majority rule? Why then is it at the state level? Why not at the county or town or individual house? I was b...

I agree that this is really ludicrous although there is a rational explanation. You have to understand a few things about the game industry first though. So to be clear about the differences between a minor and major battle: In a minor battle your reserve acts the same as the commited row. In a major battle the reserve cannot be directly drawn upon by either of the two sub battles. A sub battle with no remaining commited units is lost. Thus its impor...

The battle of Amiens was in 1918 , after nearly four years of conflict. The Germans were using combined arms tactics (the use of special pioneers, MGs, massed heavy artillery, in a early form in 1914-1915 (in the Ardennes for instance). As to the idea that special weapons were more integrated in the...

More explicitly, because of the size of the forces and the general militarization/industrialization of the states involved a decisive military victory was extremely unlikely if not impossible. The CP was extremely successful militarily in 1914 and 1915 (much more then the Allies admitted at the time...

I'm not really parsing your logic. The Great War in the end came down to which alliance exhausted itself first. My contention (well not only mine of course) is that without US support both overt and covert the allies would have been the ones most likely to crack. In particular the introduction of a ...

Id like to second the recommendation of "The myth of the Great war". Until you read this book you won't realize how much our understanding of the war is still shaped by Allied propaganda and post war myth making. Probably the most extreme example of "the winners write the history books" ever. As to ...

This is a issue with a lot of opinions of course. I do think that the general opinion that at the start of the war the Southern troops had a edge is a fair assessment. The fact that much of the forces available at the beginning of the war where state militias. The Souther state militias where much m...

One factor that hasn't been mentioned is why the South cared so much that slavery be extended, and therefore why the election of Lincoln was such a threat. Many people think it was simply the long term fear that once firmly in the minority slaves states would be forced to abolish the institution, an...

Actually the strategic bombing in WWII was an outgrowth of the thinking of Billy Mitchell among others and was based on the idea that you could defeat a opponent primarily through airpower alone. Obviously, British and other European power actions are totally a "what if" situation. Still, I think your building a large case on a single "off the record" comment. A couple of points to consider. The introduction of Ironclads by in the Civil war had the British and their Naval planners very off b...

DIdn't mean to give the impression that I believed blockades to be ineffective, as part of a total war effort they can be quite useful. Politics in the Civil War

I understand Ageod wanting to avoid political flame wars, but its hard to intelligently discuss the ACW without touching on the politics OF THE TIME. You can say that a strong central goverment would have incresed the South's chances, and I agree, but the same underlying reasons they seceeded is why they were so divided.
