I think the discussion here may have explained the game mechanics. However it never really explored the rationale behind it. These regions are 10's of miles across. In your example, Polk is well dug in, in good terrain, but that does not mean it is like WW1, with continuous trenches. Grant, with sup...

Problem with mod

I have installed your mod (1.13b), following instructions (inc UAC off). Seems to install ok, but when I run the prog, I get 'file not found', localstrings*.csv in \(sfvf)\settings ... I have checked my sfvf folder and there is no settings subfolder... deleting modpath reverts to the vanilla 1/13b o...

Armies use a different naming scheme. When you form an army, it gets its name from a predefined list where the name is selected based on where the army is formed (of course, making sure names aren't duplicated ;) ) If you want to change an Army name to another, remove the leader from command, then ...

Note that the judicious use of units formed outside the command chain can be very useful. Units outside the command chain are capable of being activated when you need them to be. This is not always the case with units in the chain. This is IMHO, a gamey exploit... I would always play that uncommand...

Just to clarify further, in a following turn, once the division is paid for, you can split it up, and reorganise it without paying for it again. The key is the division commander must have at least one unit combined with him when you end the turn. You pay nothing extra for doing this. If you split t...

Yep - railroad raiding is a 2 turn endeavour: turn 1 move to area scheduled for ... environmental improvement. Turn 2, set unit to demolish tracks, and either bug out, or stay put... Means you have to end the turn in the area. Not unrealistic - stops you getiing too ambitious :)

Can't speak for all of Europe, but it is the biggest conflict in the middle of the 19th century - the Crimean war was far smaller and just a little earlier. You can change Div commanders over without paying for a new division. Disband the dividion in question, and as long as it is reformed the same turn (with the new general, or the old one if you have made a mistake) and you get it for 'free' (you don't pay for the reformed div.)

I have never played with random on: are you saying that it doesn't randomise the starting stats? Having to find the good leaders to start with is a fun historical trial! Although it does tend to give the Union an advantage, if McC or McD suddenly turn out to tactical geniuses!
