Another benefit is that battle casualties tend to be evenly spread across the elements of the group - so you're unlikely to have one cavalry element completely destroyed while an infantry element remains untouched, for example.

Heh, I was pleasantly surprised to see my own hometown - Bradford - on the map even though it was probably only a very small settlement in the 1640s (it only grew to become a large city during the industrial revolution).
