Newbie confused about which patch to start with

I just bought this game today and I do not have any of the patches. At the top of this thread it says (in red): THIS PATCH DOES NOT WORK FOR THE 1.00 VERSION, if you have not installed the Foundation Patch before. But the previous box says the 1.06 patch is all I need. Would you please clarify if I ...

Two suggestions to improve the PBEM game

I'm just finishing another PBEM game where the game barely gets into 1863. There are obvious game balance tweaks needed for PBEM because in competitive PBEM gaming the South doesn't have a chance. Suggestion 1: There is no major incentive to raid the North. During this current game, at one time or a...

Sporadic bug opening menu links?

Has anyone else found times when it is impossible to select some of the options under the build/operations menu? For example, this turn I can't open the Financials link nor the Objectives link, but the others work fine (such as the Loyalty link). Is this a bug limited to my current game? Fortunately...

A bizarre event...

I'm CSA in the 1861 grand campaign. I garrison Manassas and eventually pay the costs for a fort. But because it takes more than 15 days it isn't completed in one turn. After I pay the costs my opponent moves into the area. I don't recall any battles that occurred that turn, but I didn't see a need t...

The real west in the Civil War

Frankly, I think the whole west needs to be reconsidered. Since the boxes apparently are fixed, perhaps Ageod could relabel them. Oregon was never a contested area. Rather, New Mexico was (perhaps a Ft. Union box and/or an Albuquerque/Santa Fe box representing the New Mexico region) would be useful ...

As a long time Union player, I have never run out of war supplies or anything else that industrialization produces. I almost always run out of manpower. So be very careful with how you spend your manpower points because that's what will limit you the most.

First, if you don't garrison the towns in enemy areas, they rebel and partisan units soon appear. So that doesn't seem like an option. Secondly, because instituting martial law apparently causes you to lose victory points (according to the rules book), it would seem reasonable that you should ease u...

The PBEM game is too frustrating

I believe that something needs to be done to rebalance the PBEM game. A smart CSA player that never attacks can create several strongpoints that are nearly invulnerable. On the other hand, the Union player is expected to advance long distances into enemy territory, garrisoning every town on the way ...

You don't have to think of this is bad weather. Rather, it is an event that appears to replace the "wounded in shooting by jealous lover" type event that has been removed from the game. Many would complain if it was preplanned that certain leaders disappeared at inopportune times, yet this type of r...

There is no question that it can get very cold at night in the SW deserts, but the game indicates there is snow. I have seen it snow in the Mojave Desert, but it only hangs around for a day or two at the most, and only causes delays where highways cross mountain passes. In 17 years of doing desert f...

Where do the ships get the supply that they use? I can trace a supply line to nearby ports. And one of the ships that became unsupplied was a transport ship I believe (with supplies I think). What causes blockade fleets to lose supply?

I just had much of my blockade fleet become unsupplied. I have no idea why it happened, or how I can prevent it. So I extracted the unsupplied fleet units and tried to recombine them to send them to a port. But I can't seem to recombine the fleets anymore in the naval boxes. Are there new bugs with ...

This was a point made in the original BOA tutorial, but not, as I recall, in the AACW tutorial. You should never cross rivers in the face of heavy opposition. As others have said here, just find a way to cross somewhere else.

Meeting/beating the historic timeline is possible

I'm not having any problem making the historical timeline versus the CSA AI set on the "hard" level and giving it a full view of my dispositions. Forts Donelson and Henry just fell in Oct 61. Against an experienced human I conquered everything by late 1863. Removing the ahistoric Appalachian rail li...

I don't know if anyone has reported this bug, but I unloaded a leader at a Union port in the Florida Keys (it was supposed to be a simple layover). The next turn he wasn't able to get back on the ship, and I have tried to load him a whole variety of ways for the last ten turns and failed (e.g., maki...

PBEM 1861 campaign results

I just finished a full 1861 campaign PBEM with a competent opponent (after a few restarts which were even less balanced in favor of the Union). In this game the Union won on turn 62, having taken everything but Atlanta and Norfolk. It is my opinion that the CSA cannot defend such a wide front agains...

I'm confused by this. Just for an example, say it is turn 40. Which of the backup files (labeled 1 to 24) should I use to find the turn 40 back-up files? Should I try turn 16 (24 +16)? I've noticed that in every 1861 full campaign PBEM that I host the backup folders are only created through turn 24. Is this intended? Is there any way to recover a pbem game after turn 24? Just wondering.

Look, if river ironclads are still going to show up in Great Lake shipyards I can deal with it (by only building them in Missouri and Kentucky). Ironclad construction on the Mississippi and its tributaries

One frustrating item is that when you construct a "river" ironclad, gunboat or transport in the states of Illinois and Ohio (and perhaps Indiana), they often show up on the Great Lakes where they are useless. It would be very helpful if the game differentiated "river" boat construction from "lake" b...

There was a situation just like this in BOA that I complained about a few weeks ago in the Matrixgames forum. I'm wondering if the patches have changed the game routines for pacifying the southern sympathizers. Go beyond the training step

Dinsdale--what this means is that you are now trained in the basics of the game and should be ready for PBEM. A human opponent will not make many significant errors, and you'll probably have to really work for a victory. I'm finding that this is an excellent PBEM game--and quite challenging to win.
