In a lot of my readings on the soldiers' daily routine it seemed like they made coffee at the drop of a hat--just about whenever they had a spare moment. I was wondering if there was a particular way to make coffee in the way the troops might have while on the march with very limited time and equip...

Been asked before a million times probably. I want to ask again. Did the confederates stand a chance of having gotten away with secession? We all know that the industrial and economic might of the Union was so much larger, so on an equal basis of numbers and firepower, the Union was going to win in...

I can look it up on the web, but prefer to ask your direct experience, did Chamberlain write any good books about his experience in the Civil War? Started watching the old mini-series called "The Blue and The Gray". Will comment once I'm more into it. Chamberlain put his memoirs in a book called "T...

John_C, I went to http://www.imdb.com website, selected Jeff Daniels who plays Chamberlain, and it pulled up all of the movies he has been in. It shows in "Gods & Generals" he was Lt.Colonel Chamberlain and in "Gettysburg" it show him as Colonel Chamberlain. I guess he was promoted somewhere in-bet...

Soccercw, Yes, the Mad Minute game also shows the style of fighting, all based on close knit lines. But still, I can't help but think to myself, when I see two lines facing each other at close range, doing volley fire, that if one of the lines were to drop to the ground and fire from there, they'd ...

I've been thinking of getting involved ever since I read Confederates in the Attic a few years back. I've a got a large reenactment event coming up next month near me at The Henry Ford/Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Mi. Is there anything I should keep mind as I review the different groups there wi...

You know, I did enjoy the movie Glory. One of the things that surprized me in it was to see the fighting style of the Civil War. When the black unit has its first engagement with the enemy, they form a line , and the enemy just in front of them too, and then they start shooting at each other. But i...

I thought Glory an inept, absolutely miserable application of contemporary social correctness that has no relevance to history (other than the blatant insults it delivered to the very concept of entertainment ostensibly based on historical events). But, maybe that's just a cranky old curmudgeon tal...

Why? Because the representation of the "Civil War" is downright humorous. The uniforms are completely inaccurate. The story takes place in the west where I hardly doubt the call "Long live Robert E Lee would be heard". It certainly shouldnt be called a Civil War movie...more like a 'movie that has ...

Gettysburg came out in 1993 when I was 11 and was the main catalyst for my intererest today. So when alot of the reenacting community had a chance to be in Gods and Generals we were absolutely stoked about it. It was so hyped up in the our community and this movie was going to again bring the Civil ...

I wouldnt say either sides beginning "morale" was higher than the other. The colonial Americans fought the British, who also had more advantages. But that doesnt mean American morale was higher than the British at the start. In fact the British won almost every single early engagement. The Union mor...

Back to Sid though, it was the first real time war game that was fun. It has its inaccuracies/quirks, such as only being able to aim at one unit (which allows you to put regiments in column and run around the enemy). Units also get into formation and move too fast, making it more of a speed dominate...

Used to play AOR allll the time. The best part of the game is creating your own battles. You get to create units, choose their size, weapon, and even every detail on each units uniforms. Doesnt really match up with games coming out today, but it was still fun to play

Take Command - 2nd Manassas is the second volume of a great real time ACW series. Takes into account giving orders, which have to actually be hand carried across a battlefield by a courier (which, as in real life, can take time depending on the locations of units). VERY accurate in terms of fighting...
