The New Math

I begin a turn with Artillery Research at Level 2 with zero points. I invest 250 gold and sundry action points in the Bruchmuller research option which offers me 75 artillery research points. I begin the next turn with Artillery Research at Level 2 and 30 points. Is this some quirk of the new math o...

I've never thought of doing anything with them other than attaching them to corps and armies to increase command span.

Damn. Well you learn something new every day, or every other day, or once in a month. I'm playing on the 1.04 patch but now I'll need to make sure that the fix you've pointed to is incorporated in that. If it's not you'll hear the scream in Colchis.

Re: few bugs

Yep, I'd sign up for all of those and I think all of them could be managed within the confines of the game's mechanics. The only option that I'm objecting to is giving Turkey the possibility of building dreadnoughts during the course of the game as it stands, and that's because it was in fact imposs...

Not just loss of picture(s)

It seems that the loss of graphics referred to in my previous thread is just the tip of the iceberg. It now appears that I have lost not just the graphics update material but the entire update. But it doesn't end there. When I hit the Check for Update button to reinstall I get a " .. could not ...

Re: few bugs

There's definitely a tension between the actual historical situation and the way it's represented in game terms and I accept that that's unavoidable. But in translating from the first to the second I'd argue that we should take care in avoiding "fantastory". As far as history takes us, Ger...

Re: 1\3 casualties return rules

As you suspect, jim, there's no mechanic for any "natural" decrease in casualties due to the recovery of missing men or the return to duty of wounded personnel. Instead, if I'm reading the manual correctly, losses in casualties can only be made good through the "replacement" mech...

Re: few bugs

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood your point. In order to turn out dreadnoughts Turkey would have needed slips big enough to accommodate the builds, rolling mills able to produce large armour plates of sufficient thickness to clad them, turreted artillery mounts capable of supporting their big guns, the hi...

Sudden loss of picture(s)

Returning to the game after several days' absence I found that the graphic updates included with 10301 had somehow "dropped-out". The only possible reasons I've been able to identify are the most recent update of Windows 10 and the inclusion of the Afghanistan add in the opening screen (cl...

Re: How do I use River Monitors?

I go with useless. Durk and Czert, both well-credentialed players, feel that they do bar river crossings, but they don't appear to have blocked movement across the Sava in any of the 20 or so games I've played and I've never seen that outcome noted in the action reports.

Re: I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

If you're correct about River Monitors blocking river crossings then I must be doing something seriously wrong, czerto. Playing as CP I've had River Monitor flotillas plying the Middle Sava in at least a dozen games and not once have they prevented Serb units from crossing.

I've been working on the railroad - nope, seems I haven't

Bear with me. Along the Levant coast there are a string of five regions containing "unconstructed" railroads. The info you get when hovering over any of these is that construction is possible "from 1916" if you "control all regions on the line track between Port Said and El ...

Re: I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

You're dead right on your first point, czerto - I think it's medium arty, heavy and super-heavy arty, and naval. But I was complaining about the lack of any information on the difference between ammo dumps and magazines that might help me decide on which ones to build, keep, or destroy. If they have...

Re: Fraught Forts

Sorry, I haven't been sufficiently clear. What's puzzling me is how a Level 1 fort can sustain three levels of damage - surely one level is all that it would take to cancel protection. Certainly damage can be repaired, but for a single level fort that would result in all reference to damage being er...

Re: Fraught Forts

I've been besieging a Russian fort in Chotin region for some time now. The map labelling tells me that it's a size 1 fort. An icon presently sitting over the region tells me that it has so far been reduced 3 levels and offers no protection. Last turn there was an icon sitting on the region telling m...

Re: I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

I'm half-way with you, Durk. For me the joy of a game is not in the winning but in the mastering of the skills it takes to win. However, I see those skills as centering around strategy, tactics, planning, and organisation, not unearthing basic facts as to what the features provided in the game actua...

Re: I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

I accept that you can pretty much figure out what magazines and ammo dumps are for but I'm having difficulty understanding practical difference between the two. My point, though, is why should I have to stop my game and beg information from the board when a line or two in the manual could provide th...

Re: Thoughts and comments

I actually like the imprecision of the build and movement mechanics. It frustrates the hell out of me but I think it's a reasonable representation of the way these things worked at the time - and still do for that matter. On the build issue, for example, I can't think of a capital ship serving durin...

You're right, there's nothing in the rules at all relating to them. But I figured since the system provides for the placement of minefields in pre-determined regions it might also re-generate them.

Re: Replacements - Automatic or Manual

I also go the manual route. With an eye to experience gain I prefer to replace rather than build and I've found that I can usually get ahead of the game so that apart from the aftermath of cataclysmic battles I only need to visit that screen every three turns or so.

I've just had a destroyed railroad icon pop up in Podolsk. Since the map doesn't show a railroad in that region something seems amiss.

Re: I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

The most recent omission I've noticed is the absence of any explanation as to what riverine naval units do. One can make a fair enough guess at what the transport function is, but not about the utility of River Monitors - they appear to do nothing useful at all. Immediately before that came the surp...

I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

please do something about the manual - the online version would be enough. This is the first AGEOD game which I've found to be unreservedly disappointing. It's partly because the engine (as is) is unsuited to the topic. It's partly because some of the systems seem not to have been fully thought thro...
