Re: Why are Russian Supply Train replacements hideously expensive (in WS)?

In game logic it could be as a surrogate for the critical inadequacies of the Russian rail net. The problems of getting war materials and supplies to the armies proved extremely limiting to military operations in the period 1914-16, and insurmountable thereafter. Maybe the designers inflated the cos...

Re: German naval raiders

For me, finding the one blinding opening for the German fleet makes the waiting and whittling worthwhile You're so right! Oh, to put the High Seas Fleet behind the battlecruisers in their death ride, break the British line, and litter the bed of the North Sea with Newcastle steel. Such stuff as dre...

Re: German naval raiders

That's a good tip but when everything's boiled down I can't see any way the the CP are going to win through a war on commerce. I use my battle fleets to support land operations in the Baltic and Black seas but other than the odd outing there most of their time is spent in port whittling and whoring....

Re: German naval raiders

Yeah, it's a trade-off - but for me it's not worth the candle. I have so much trouble keeping track of all my other units (a positive feature of the game I'd argue) that I'm more than happy to forego the marginal benefits that the raiders offer and just mothball them.

Re: Explanation please

No can do I'm afraid. By rolling back the turn for a re-run with evacuation I wiped the data - or at least I managed to hide it somewhere I can't find. Your point about the northern front is a good one though. The Turks and Austrians had made way more headway than their historical counterparts but t...

Re: Explanation please

You better roll back the turn and then move the units to another place then, because yes I believe it is what you think... :bonk: Sorry, should have gotten to this earlier - distracted by the pain. Rolling back doesn't seem to be a big help. The firing of the treaty event appears to be determined b...

Re: Explanation please

I can't recall the message exactly, but it nominated "areas around" Volkova, Alekhnova, and Veliki Luki. Though not specifically mentioned it also produced the abandonment of areas around my monitor, computer desk, and all residential facilities within earshot.

Explanation please

Playing CP and I've just had the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk fire for Russia. I've also had a bunch of my units situated beyond the treaty line "destroyed for lack of transport". Surely that can't mean what it appears to mean.

Re: German locked "city" divisions?

Strange indeed. Maybe a kind of proximity trigger that frees them when enemy units are adjacent rather than attacking, or maybe my installation is buggy - though that doesn't seem to have had the same effect elsewhere. Sorry I can't be of further "help" but the details of the system are so...

Re: German locked "city" divisions?

Unfortunately the game isn't sufficiently developed to allow you to believe what you read. There may well be an event somewhere that turns loose such divisions, but if there is I'm unaware of it. I can say with certainty however that some time prior to May 1915 (the turn I'm playing now) the divisio...

Re: Entente Opponent for Great War Full Campaign

There are definitely still players hammering away at the game, Dennis, but I'm thinking that few of them have been able to beat down the bugs and fill the information holes sufficiently to confidently enter into contested play. Or maybe that's just me.

Re: German locked "city" divisions?

I can't speak for all the German cities beginning the game with fully formed divisions present, but most of them seem to unlock their divisions on a pre-programmed timetable. I know that both Strasbourg and Breslau liberate their named divisions relatively early in the game, but Posen, for example, ...

Re: Testing for signs of life

I don't want to trash the game with repetitions of the complaints I've lodged in earlier posts, Durk, because I agree that it's unarguably the most comprehensive treatment of the WWI that I've come across, and in many respects the most accurate. But it's also virtually impossible to play in any info...

Re: Testing for signs of life

Both, but if I had to pick one over the other I'd plug for AGEOD. I'm still wringing some enjoyment out of EAW but it's really hard going, and short of the kind of rebuild Altaris has described in his mod I figure the system has pretty much strangled the poor thing. AGEOD, on the other hand, continu...

There's a "one more turn" option that I've come across when winning before the 1919 close, but I don't know whether that extends to other situations.

Re: Schlieffen Plan After The War Starts ?

All of what Ace argues and more. Rather than invading Belgium at this early stage I'd just shift any excess resources to reinforce your border defences. Whatever successes you achieve in Belgium will be bought at the expense of the adverse attack:defence ratio and so amp up your own losses, and unle...

No deposit depots

I'm attempting to create a depot in Morhange. The rulebook tells me that I can do this by converting Supply Wagons but the tooltip I get when trying to do so tells me that I can't due to either some structure in the region, insufficient control, or insufficient units of the right type. The only stru...

It's probably been already noted, but in case not I'll mention that the spelling "Luxembourg" was introduced post WWI. Until then I believe it was the more Germanic "Luxemburg".

Re: I've been working on the railroad - nope, seems I haven't

Just an update. I've come across an earlier post from Pocus that accounts for the lethargy of my engineers. Seems the rail-building opportunity is only available to the Allies. Score one more for a maddeningly deficient rulebook.

Re: Points to Know - Central Powers

Wow! That is a frighteningly useful contribution, Arrow. I'm still digesting the greater part of it but I'd offer three, mainly grand-strategic, points that I've found important to note as the CP. First, Moltke was right. As your analysis notes, it's easier to defend than attack and it's easier to d...

That's just what I'm seeing, Alta, and it makes perfect sense in terms of the RoI for technological development. But it would have saved a lot of angst and colourful language directed at the developers if that explanation had been included in the rulebook.

More of the same

The Artillery Research selection offering 40 points in fact delivers only 10! Either the option information is false or there's some form of unexplained accounting going on. Given that there have been two patches so far the effect is to make the game look very shoddy.

The New Math

I begin a turn with Artillery Research at Level 2 with zero points. I invest 250 gold and sundry action points in the Bruchmuller research option which offers me 75 artillery research points. I begin the next turn with Artillery Research at Level 2 and 30 points. Is this some quirk of the new math o...
