I've been working on the railroad - nope, seems I haven't

Bear with me. Along the Levant coast there are a string of five regions containing "unconstructed" railroads. The info you get when hovering over any of these is that construction is possible "from 1916" if you "control all regions on the line track between Port Said and El ...

Re: I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

You're dead right on your first point, czerto - I think it's medium arty, heavy and super-heavy arty, and naval. But I was complaining about the lack of any information on the difference between ammo dumps and magazines that might help me decide on which ones to build, keep, or destroy. If they have...

Re: Fraught Forts

Sorry, I haven't been sufficiently clear. What's puzzling me is how a Level 1 fort can sustain three levels of damage - surely one level is all that it would take to cancel protection. Certainly damage can be repaired, but for a single level fort that would result in all reference to damage being er...

Re: Fraught Forts

I've been besieging a Russian fort in Chotin region for some time now. The map labelling tells me that it's a size 1 fort. An icon presently sitting over the region tells me that it has so far been reduced 3 levels and offers no protection. Last turn there was an icon sitting on the region telling m...

Re: I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

I'm half-way with you, Durk. For me the joy of a game is not in the winning but in the mastering of the skills it takes to win. However, I see those skills as centering around strategy, tactics, planning, and organisation, not unearthing basic facts as to what the features provided in the game actua...

Re: I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

I accept that you can pretty much figure out what magazines and ammo dumps are for but I'm having difficulty understanding practical difference between the two. My point, though, is why should I have to stop my game and beg information from the board when a line or two in the manual could provide th...

Re: Thoughts and comments

I actually like the imprecision of the build and movement mechanics. It frustrates the hell out of me but I think it's a reasonable representation of the way these things worked at the time - and still do for that matter. On the build issue, for example, I can't think of a capital ship serving durin...

I don't think so, but congratulations for getting to 1918. So far I've never cleared '17 without throwing in the towel for one reason or another.

Re: Mine forever

You're right, there's nothing in the rules at all relating to them. But I figured since the system provides for the placement of minefields in pre-determined regions it might also re-generate them.

Re: Replacements - Automatic or Manual

I also go the manual route. With an eye to experience gain I prefer to replace rather than build and I've found that I can usually get ahead of the game so that apart from the aftermath of cataclysmic battles I only need to visit that screen every three turns or so.

I've just had a destroyed railroad icon pop up in Podolsk. Since the map doesn't show a railroad in that region something seems amiss.

Re: I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

The most recent omission I've noticed is the absence of any explanation as to what riverine naval units do. One can make a fair enough guess at what the transport function is, but not about the utility of River Monitors - they appear to do nothing useful at all. Immediately before that came the surp...

I mean this in the kindest possible way, but

please do something about the manual - the online version would be enough. This is the first AGEOD game which I've found to be unreservedly disappointing. It's partly because the engine (as is) is unsuited to the topic. It's partly because some of the systems seem not to have been fully thought thro...

Riverboat Blues

I have the Donau Div. fleet of River Monitors (strength 180) active on the Mid-Sava and failing spectacularly to prevent a Serbian army crossing from Loznica into Vukovar. That same fleet informs me that its guns have insufficient range to undertake a bombardment mission. To quote Basil Fawlty, &quo...

Mine forever

An answer to an earlier question on minefields indicated that they could not be swept. A natural corollary to this would seem to be that they are indestructible and that even if Germany held the entire coastline of the Gulf of Riga, say, the starting Russian minefields would remain. Yes?

Thanks for that, Altaris. Wholly unrealistic in terms of how such vessels were actually used, but at least it identifies an in-game use for them. C'mon home boys.

Re: Building a rail road

I'm not at all sure that you can build a railroad, daniel. The available commands only allow you to repair one or destroy one and the manual gives no indication that you can do anything more.

There's something wrong with my broom

I've had a Minesweeper fleet with the setup strength of two units sitting on an enemy minefield for three months - result zero. Can't find any command that I might have missed (in fact none of them appear relevant at all) and can't even find a reference to the beasties in the manual. Are minesweeper...

Re: Fraught Forts

Well that's just plain nasty - realistic but nasty. Thanks Pocus. In the same vein, do defenders ever just surrender when all their defences are down? I ask because I've not seen that happen, but perhaps I've been too hasty. "The trouble with Fred is, he's - he's too hasty. Now you never get no...

Re: How does one "unsplit"?

Thanks lefty, that did it for me. As well as restoring splits I'd been trying to construct divisions on the same pattern and finding myself locked out, but that's a different (if related) issue so I'll continue batting it around in my head until a bell rings. You've been most helpful.

Fraught Forts

I position appropriately qualified units to besiege a fort and at the commencement of the following turn am greeted with a symbol announcing that the fort's defences now offer no protection - most gratifying. I maintain the siege only to find that at the commencement of the following turn the said s...

How does one "unsplit"?

There are times when I need to split a division in order to get a better picture of its composition - to discover the nationality of Austro-Hungarian brigades for example. Doing so increases the command weight of that unit, though, so having learned what I needed to know I'd like to put 'em back the...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, Nikel, but I believe the first part of that explanation would better read as follows (italics added): Procedure: To form a Corps, first select an unattached general and press the 'Enable Corps Command' button. Alternatively, remove an attached general from his current...
