The basic problem may be this: A complex game gives the human player many tools to work with in the selection of units, organizing his forces, and so forth; but it is very hard to design an AI that knows how to properly use these tools. The extra elements that make a game more historical and more in...

By strong morale unit, do you mean experienced troops, or something in addition to that?

I had expected that winning generals would move up to the 1 or 2 spot in seniority and be promotable without a penalty. But it has seemed to me that, even when a general becomes promotable, he is often fairly far down in seniority and I suffer a big penalty. Is that your experience, or am I doing so...

AI strategic behavior

I reported my experience with the AI elsewhere in this forum. In brief, the AI does not attack my armies. It goes after small groups, up to about three units. But there is no Shiloh, or Gettysburg, or Stone's River, etc. At the same time, unlike real life, not fighting the enemy armies does not seem...

AI, North and South

I have played three games through to mid 1863 or later, two of the three starting with 1862, and two of the three as CSA. Settings normal aggressiveness (turned down for the winter months), modest FOW advantage. In the USA game, the AI was interesting enough to be a good sparring partner, which is a...

Well into my first game as Union, I was curious about the experience of other players against the AI. I found your AAR. Very nice work, and a real contribution to this forum.

For me, AACW has a bit too much detail, but it sounds as if that would be a big plus for you. I have noticed that a lot of people who like AACW also are fans of WitP. Obviously, try the demo first, but if you are a Civil War buff, I would give 10 to 1 odds that you will like this game.

I have been trying to get to like this game, since I really like the operational level in a strategic setting, and am a Civil War buff. But I do not like micromanagement. Some gamers do, but others do not. So I hope AGEOD will do something to accomodate those of us who do not. I find I dread turns m...

I played two games as CSA, no mods, normal difficulty, normal aggressiveness, moderate FOW advantage. In the July game, the Union did nothing for many months, and I finally got impatient, and started an 1862 game. I played that for a full year, and the Union still never did anything except nip at my...

I don't know about "tech trees" as such in ACW, but I saw a list on a ACW website showing about 40 technological advances during the war. The most famous, I suppose, was the Monitor, but some others probably had a greater impact. The list might have included organizational and logistical innovations...

If you think this one is complex don't even go anywhere near FoF, the other currently big ACW game, as it's a lot more complex than this game. I wouldn't say anything here, since this is a site devoted to one of these two great games, but this comment seems quite inaccurate -- or at least incomplet...

Before condemning some games, you should keep in mind that graphics is, to some extent, a matter of taste. I personally very much like the graphics of FOF and MMG, for example, both of which are criticized above. The FOF map looks to me like a map a general would use, not a child's map as some games...

There is a public beta patch for Forge of Freedom that makes it far better. To make a fair and up-to-date judgment about FOF, you have to try a game with this patch. The AI will give you a run for your money!

Thanks, Mr Burns, I had forgotten about the gold standard. But, if a dollar can be cashed for gold, it is hard to see how much inflation is possible. A $100 bill is always going to be worth $100 in gold, and the price is gold is not going to be dependent on the value of Confederate currency. Maybe I...

The graph's numbers look unrealistically precise. Inflation rate is a highly inferential concept, and normally takes a good deal of surveying to come up with a reasoanble estimate. The people who put this graph together knew this, and that is why they let the reader know that it is based on the pric...

Yes, Take Command is an absolutely extraordinary tactical game. It is amazingly immersive, and each game seems just like a real Civil War battle. You play at any level -- commanding a whole army, or a corps, a division, etc., or even a battery of artillery. When you command a whole army, you depend ...
